It seems shortly after the Snow White inspired 'Mirror Mirror' hits theaters, another darker retelling will hit theaters. Snow White and the Huntsman is a version in which, instead of killing her as the queen orders, the huntsman trains snow white to fight the evil queen. This version stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as the evil queen.
The movie is from the same producer of Alice in Wonderland and you can see similarities such as her armor is similar to Alice's and the mushrooms in the poster above remind me a lot of the Alice in Wonderland poster.
It does look as though the costumes are really well done though. Colleen Atwood (also known for Alice in Wonderland, Sweeny Todd, A Series of Unfortunate Events) designed the costumes.
It will be interesting to see how this version turns out. I'm hoping it's not too dark. I read somewhere it would be somewhere along the lines of The Lord of the Rings. But I have a feeling I will prefer the more light version with Julia Roberts. However the costumes in this do look neat.
I love what they've done with her sleeves to give her the Snow White look in a more authentic historical way:
I'm interested to see if she wears any other dresses in the film. It all looks beautifully done so far!
I saw the trailer for Mirror Mirror (the retelling of Snow White) yesterday and I have to admit...I kind of want to see it. I love fairy tales and I think Julia Roberts looks really funny in this. But the main reason I want to see it is for the costumes.
They look incredible with a lot of detail!
Some of them are over the top...but it's a fairy tale and besides...that's what is so fun. :)
The queen's costumes look amazing, just what a vain queen's wardrobe ought to look like.
I think this costume is amazing:
The Prince is played by Armie Hammer:
Hmm...I can't wait to see it. Sean Bean is also cast as the king but I can't find pictures anywhere.
I'm so in love with Maria's underpinnings in The Secret of Moonacre. I finally watched this movie on YouTube awhile back because it seems like they aren't going to release it in the US and I got tired of waiting. It was a bit of a disappointment as it strayed quite a lot from the book, which I loved. But it was still worth watching for all the amazing costumes!
I just love all the different fabrics that look quite vintage:
I also love her blue corset. Inspires me to finish my corset...I know I know...I say that a lot. ;)
Anyway...I'm quite obsessed with underpinnings already but I thought these were really awesome and different. :) I think it would be so fun to have an underpinnings tea party one of these days. Underpinnings are just so pretty and it's such a shame they don't get to be seen. Well I hope you all are having a great Summer so far! I'm pretty busy helping some friends get ready for a wedding this week so I wont be sewing or posting much. Have a lovely week!
A new Nanny McPhee is in the making starring Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes, Maggie Smith, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. It's called "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang". The thing I'm super excited about though is that Jaqueline Durran is doing the costumes! (costume designer for 2005 Pride and Prejudice, Atonement) I can't wait to see what she comes up with. I know it will be wonderful. :) It's set to release in Europe in spring of 2010. I have yet to find the US release date, if there will even be one. But as soon as I find pictures I'll do a post about it. :) Here's some pictures of the first Nanny McPhee, costumes designed by Nic Ede (designer for Flyboys, Lorna Doone)
I'm sure Jaqueline Durran will do just as wonderful of a job...I'm looking forward to it.
I've had a polyvore account for forever and I play around on it occasionally...but I never actually finished a set. Today I was inspired by girlish daydreams and fairy tales and this is what emerged.
It's been snowing non stop here for several days and has me in a Narnian mood. I'm about to watch The Lion the Witch and the Wardobe for the second time this week, I love that movie ever so much! I think a nice cup of tea with Mr. Tumnus would be enough to keep me going to finish last minute Christmas gifts. There's just something wonderful about the first snow. Even though it's been snowing for days I still consider this being in the "first snow" because we have yet to have the first snow melt. ;)
I think the snow would be even lovelier if I had a fur coat. :) Or at least fur lined. I think Father Christmas' costume is sooo amazing in this film. It's like an ancient battle warrior costume, but still merry. I really want to make it one day.
And the White Witch has the most amazing costumes. See, even she buries herself in furs. :) I love her icycle crown, and everything about this costume:
Alright...I'm off to my sewing. And a cup of Twinings peppermint tea. (The best!) :D Hope your all having a very merry Christmas season!
I found this trailer on YouTube and thought you all might enjoy checking it out. :)
Also, I've started reading the book and already I'm understanding the beautiful clothes. In the first chapter there is such a beautiful description of Maria's outfit....
"And the boots she had on today were calculated to raise the lowest spirits, for they were made of the softest grey leather, sewn with crystal beads round the tops, and were lined with snow white lambs wool. The chrystal beads, as it happened, could not be seen, because Maria's grey silk dress and warm grey wool pellise, also trimmed with white lamb's wool, reached to her ankles, but she herself knew they were there and the thought of them gave her a moral strength that can scarcely be overestimated. She rested herself against the thought of this beads, just as in a lesser degree she rested herself against the thought of the piece of purple ribbon that was wound about her slender waist beneath the pellise, the little bunch of violets that was tucked so far away inside the recess of her grey velvet bonnet that it was scarcely visible, and the grey silk mittens adorning the small hands that were hidden inside the big white muff. For Maria was one of your true aristocrats; the perfection of the hidden things was even more important to her than the outward show."
Wow...and I think I want her wardobe. It says her nurse made all of her clothes..."the child's clothes had been created with a fiery zeal that made of each small garment a work of art."
And as we see from pictures of the film, they've definately made works of art! :)
Check out my other post on the costumes with lots of pictures HERE.
I think I'd like her boots today. They sound warm!
I'm simply stunned by the brilliant costume designs in this new film, The Secret of Moonacre. I honestly don't know much of anything about this film except it's a fantasy...it has the little girl from The Golden Compass and...best of all....it has Ioan Gruffudd in it! Brilliant man. :) The costumes are incredible works of art...I'm just in awe...
I'm in love with this long flowy gauzy ribbon scarf/necklace. Mmm...I want to make one! And check out that cocky collar:
I love both of these costumes:
Lovely manly coat for Mr. Gruffudd. :)
What a lovely picture...this gown is incredible!
Cozy nightgown:
I'll have to look more into this movie and see what it's about. But it appears it is only playing the the UK. :( Hopefully it will come out here...at least on video. I'd love to see it, even if just for the costumes. ;)
Although I continually talk about movie costumes on this blog, I am not a movie reviewer. Not all the films I discuss are recommended and I do not choose to review weather they are appropriate or not for the simple fact that every person's standards are different. Something that is fine for me may be offensive to some one else and visa versa. If you would like to look into the appropriateness of a title, I recommend pluggedinonline.com. I have not seen all the movies I discuss, and am simply interested in the art of clothes in film. I will leave you to decide for yourself if you will watch the movie or not.
